STORME WARNING

By Stephen Segerman - SA Rock Digest #130

After impressing a lot of people as the dynamic singer for corporate/function band Havana Gas (yeah, I know it’s a terrible pun, but it’s an accurate name for a great party band), Storme has just released her debut album called, um, ‘Storme’. The songs were written with guitarist Doug Campbell and produced by Brian O’Shea. The musicians called into duty include Concord Nkabinde (bass), Barry van Zyl (drums), Wessel van Rensberg (piano), and Efrain Toro (percussion).

‘Storme’ is a mature, solid pop album not really aimed at the Britney-pack, although Storme knows how to rock any crowd. The first single release, ‘Make Love Just To Me’, illustrates Storme’s ease at handling an emotional rock song. There are plenty of other fresh and sparkling pop contenders on ‘Storme’, like the contemporary R&B groove track ‘Don’t Be A Stranger’ (co-written with O’Shea), the poignant ‘Children Of Africa’, and the funky dance suss of ‘Cookie In The Kitchen’, ‘I Lost The Pieces’, and the autobiographical ‘My Name Is Storme’.

The album manages to capture some of the "electricity" that usually accompanies Storme’s live performances, and kudos to her for putting out her own original material, when she could have just as easily included some of her well-known cover versions.
